Police in Coral Springs have arrested and charged a man they say shot a woman multiple times at a shopping plaza on Thursday in what is being described as domestic related.
Broward Sheriff’s Office
Coral Springs police said they arrested 49-year-old Abdul Perez and charged him with attempted premeditated murder, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm or ammunition subject to an injunction, and tampering with evidence.
According to the police report, Perez rammed his van into his ex-girlfriend’s car, which may have had her daughters inside. The report states Perez “deliberately drove into the victim’s car,” pinning the vehicle “between his vehicle and the building”.
Perez then approached the victim’s car in a “controlled and deliberate manner” and “fired multiple controlled and aimed shots,” the report continues. Surveillance video captured at least five shots being fired. Police confirmed the victim “was struck multiple times in both shoulders, chest, abdomen, and face”.
After the shooting, police say Perez jumped into a canal near the scene and fled. He was later found and arrested.
Perez was a no-show in bond court, waiving his appearance for the hearing. He is being held without bond.
The victim was last reported in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
People who work in the plaza expressed concern about the timing of the violence, noting that children are typically in the area. “The school is literally right here, and the McDonald’s is on this side. A lot of kids walking in front and back, most in back because there’s no traffic,” said Genesis Lopez.
Coral Springs shooting captured on surveillance video
According to police, the incident took place around 3 p.m. in the 7600 block of West Sample Road, and when officers arrived at the scene, they found a woman with several gunshot wounds.
Surveillance video in the area captured the moment when at least five gunshots could be heard as the incident unfolded.
A woman who was sitting on the curb at the time heard the shots, and then she stood up and fled the scene.
A man named Justin, who works nearby, expressed shock after the shooting.
“This is something unprecedented to happen in this area,” he said. “We are all in shock.”
Video from above the scene from Chopper 4 showed police investigating at least two cars that appeared to have crashed into each other behind the shopping plaza.
