CORAL GABLES – Jim Larranaga, who led the University of Miami’s men’s basketball team to its first Final Four in the school history in 2023, has stepped down as head coach, the Associated Press and CBS Miami’s news partner The Miami Herald reported Thursday.
The university’s athletics department has called a news conference for 1:30 p.m. with the reason not stated.
Larranaga will be replaced by associate head coach Bill Courtney for the remainder of the season, a source told AP.
The Hurricanes next play at Boston College on New Year’s Day.

Larranaga, who turned 75 in October, has been coaching for 40 years and was under contract through the 2026-27 season with Miami.
Since arriving at the Coral Gables campus in 2011, he has compiled 274-174 record.
Overall, his head coaching record is 744-505 with stops in American International (1977-79), Bowling Green (1986-1997), George Mason (1997-2011). At George Mason he coached the team to the Final Four in 2006.
The Hurricanes are 4-8 this season after an overtime loss to Mount St. Mary’s last week and have lost 18 of their past 22 games dating to last season.
Miami ended the 2023 season with a 10-game losing skid.
