MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins signed veteran go rusher Jason Pierre-Paul on Tuesday to increase depth to their protection, which just lately misplaced standout linebacker Jaelan Phillips to a season-ending Achilles tendon tear.
Pierre-Paul, a South Florida indigenous, was earlier on the New Orleans Saints’ follow squad. He was drafted in the first round by the New York Giants in 2010 and put in 8 seasons there. He’s also experienced stints with Tampa Bay (2018-2021) and Baltimore (2022).
He has 94 1/2 sacks in 14 seasons, which ranks seventh amid all active NFL players. He won a Super Bowl with the Giants in 2011 and with Tampa Bay in 2020.
Phillips tore his Achilles tendon in the fourth quarter of a 34-13 gain above the New York Jets on Black Friday, and the crew placed him on injured reserve Tuesday afternoon.
Coach Mike McDaniel mentioned it will be really hard to replicate Phillips’ manufacturing — he experienced 43 tackles, 6 1/2 sacks, 1 interception and two passes defensed in eight game titles this period — but he is self-confident in some of the depth the Dolphins have.
“There’s an aspect of individuals actively playing for him, I believe,” McDaniel claimed.
Andrew Van Ginkel changed Phillips at outside the house linebacker before this time when Phillips dealt with indirect and back again accidents, and he has ascended in Miami’s protection with four sacks and 42 tackles.
Pierre-Paul, who was a first-staff All-Pro in 2011 and has been chosen to a few Professional Bowls, will deliver a veteran presence for a Dolphins defense that is fairly younger.
He posted on his Instagram account Monday night that he is “coming household.”
