MIAMI — Shirley Gibson was known to lots of as the inaugural mayor of the City of Miami Gardens. She fought for the city’s incorporation right after challenges from all those searching to block it but over and above her specialist accolades, she meant a ton to numerous.
Gibson’s daughter, Tiffany Wimberly McMillan, remembers her mom as a no-nonsense female who gave her the applications she wanted to triumph. “My mom was a selfless servant. She served, she empowered younger men and women and she normally stood on finding the next generation all set,” she said.

McMillan tells CBS Information Miami’s Chelsea Jones her mom died times just after a mind bleed, she experienced on October 11. On the other hand, she remembers her mom as a pillar not only at home but in the local community.
Just before getting the very first mayor of Miami Gardens, Gibson was a Miami-Dade law enforcement officer. No issue the venue, Gibson experienced a vision, and others realized it far too.
“She observed lack of investment she observed absence of prospect and she stated you know what. We’re going to deal with that, and she did,” recalled Miami Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.
Just 20 years right after its generation, Miami Gardens is now the premier predominantly Black community in the overall state of Florida. Users of the community arrived to exhibit their help at the New Way Fellowship and Praise Worship Middle for the funeral and memorial products and services held for the previous mayor.
Serving as mayor from 2003 right until 2012, Gibson focused her daily life to company. Her daughter states her final act of services was on Oct 11th, when she spoke at the Embrace Women Foundation Global Women Day Celebration.
Shirley Gibson handed away on Oct 16th she was 79 years outdated.
