TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Senate could be poised this week to pass a monthly bill that would eradicate a prerequisite for unanimous jury suggestions right before dying sentences can be imposed.
The Senate is slated to choose up the monthly bill, sponsored by Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, R-Spring Hill, throughout a floor session Wednesday. The invoice would permit death sentences to be imposed based mostly on the suggestions of 8 of 12 jurors – reversing a change made in 2017 that necessary unanimity.
The difficulty emerged soon after Nikolas Cruz final year was sentenced to lifestyle in prison for the 2018 murders of 17 pupils and school associates at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. A jury did not unanimously recommend the demise penalty for Cruz, resulting in a lifestyle sentence.
