“Top Gun” is turning 40 and you’ve got a chance to watch it again, or for the first time, as it was intended, on the big screen.
The 1986 film, as well as it’s sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” that was released in 2022, are returning to theaters for the milestone anniversary.
The re-release it for one week only, beginning May 13 at AMC Theatres nationwide.
It was 40 years ago that Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell captivated audiences with his love for flying and daredevil attitude. “Top Gun” became an instant blockbuster when it was released, making Tom Cruise a superstar and sending the Navy’s recruitment numbers through the roof.
“Top Gun: Maverick” — despite being released more than three decades after the original — was a box office success, grossing more than $1 billion worldwide. The film was also nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture.
Paramount announced last month at CinemaCon that “Top Gun 3” is in the works.
So, AMC is giving viewers the chance to experience the adrenaline, the soundtrack and those F-14s all over again.
