Driver injured after an SUV drove into a Broward home, making it unsafe to live in, officials say

A house near Fort Lauderdale has sustained major damage after an SUV drove into it on Thursday afternoon.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Department said it happened at around 3:15 p.m. at the 2900th block of Northwest 13th Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters found an adult woman inside the SUV suffering from a leg injury and bleeding. She was safely extricated from the car and was transported to Broward Health Fort Lauderdale as a Level 2 trauma patient.

She is said to have non-life-threatening injuries. A witness, who saw what happened while she was in line for the food bank down the road, told CBS News Miami the driver is an older woman who was speeding and probably had a medical episode because of the speed.

“It was really scary because you have people standing in line here, and I hope that she didn’t hit anybody, I hope that she didn’t hit [construction workers over here. We came over here to see what was going on,” the witness, who said his name was Al, said

Five people were inside the home at the time of the incident, but authorities say they were not injured. The owner of the house, Goldie Pitts, said she was coming back from an appointment when this happened.

She said that she is still processing the damage to her home of more than 40 years.

“I can’t explain it. I’m nervous. I know God will make a way. That’s all I can say,” Pitts said.

The home is close to a construction site, which some witnesses told CBS News Miami was where the noise of the crash was coming from.

Officials added an orange sticker to the home, indicating that the damage to the home makes it unsafe to live in. Pitts said that she does have insurance and many family members will help her, but she is shaken by this crash.

No word yet from authorities on what caused the crash, nor the identity of the driver.
