In what sounds like something more befitting of “The Mask” than real life, people online are claiming that there’s a fake Jim Carrey out in the world.
After the 64-year-old actor made an appearance at the César Awards last month, online conspiracies emerged about him being cloned or impersonated after his post award interview.
The rumors only intensified after a makeup artist claimed he pretended to be Carrey at the awards ceremony.
Why do people think Jim Carrey was cloned?
The 2026 César Awards, which honor the best in French film, were held in Paris on Feb. 26. Carrey, who has kept a low profile in recent years and whose last film was 2024’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” gave a speech in French while accepting an honorary César Award.
After his speech, he spoke with reporters about writing and rehearsing for the moment. Many were confused by his calmer and emotional demeanor, as opposed to his funny faces and wacky character that he’s known for.
Many online suggested that he got botox or work done on his face, while others commented on the difference in his voice. Others wrote, “He’s just trolling people and awards as only he can” and “He gave up and started going with the flow.”
However, Carrey’s team said he was indeed on hand at the ceremony.
“Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary Cesar Award,” his team said in a statement to TODAY.com.
Carrey’s previous red carpet appearance was in November 2025 when he reunited with his former “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” co-star Taylor Momsen at the 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Additionally, Gregory Caulier, general counsel for the César Awards, told Variety in a statement that Carrey was in attendance.
“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation,” he said.
“Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words,” Caulier said. “He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”
Who is Alexis Stone and why do people think he impersonated Jim Carrey?
Alexis Stone, known for transforming into famous celebs, stoked interest in the matter with an Instagram post on March 1 that went viral in which he claimed he had impersonated the “Ace Ventura” star.
“Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris,” he captioned the post, which featured two photos of what looks like Carrey’s face, along with a shot of a prosthetic mask and teeth, makeup and wig, with the Eiffel Tower in the background.
The post generated plenty of conversation.
“🎯” commented Katy Perry.
“Still suspicious button———>,” another skeptical user wrote.
“We demand proof of life from Jim Carrey !!!!” someone else commented.
Other people also chimed in to note that AI might’ve played a role in the matter.
“That’s ai we need proof and we need to see that Jim is well,” someone wrote.
“This is not real. The picture with the make-up kit is AI 100%,” another person commented.
TODAY.com reached out to Stone and the César Awards for comment, but have not heard back.
