Costco is about to alleviate a big customer headache.
The warehouse retail club chain is finally allowing customers to order cakes digitally with a new update in the Costco app rolling out in 2026. This means you can finally order a custom cake from the comfort of your own home. The same goes for deli trays, which also can be ordered online now.
The update was revealed December 2025 during a Q1 2026 earnings call by CEO Ron Vachris, who cited customer feedback as the motivation for the change.
“Many of the things that we’ve heard from our members that could be a little bit clunky are now moving to a digital state, and we’re seeing great adoption right out of the chute,” Vachris said during the call, adding that the company aims on “locking in” its brick-and-mortar business with its virtual digital business.
Adopting modern UI is something Costco has lagged behind on compared to its competitors, like Sam’s Club, which has become a sticking point for many members.
Until this year, customers had to visit a physical location to order a custom cake, filling out a sheet of paper, which was the only way to get one. This rankled folks who needed to take two separate trips to the store and park in its sometimes-nightmarish parking lot.
“Two trips to the store for a cake is an inconvenience,” a 2022 Reddit thread reads, and one individual even said they’ve phoned a friend who lives by their Costco to fill out the form for them.
As some may know from the many cake fails on the internet, filling out a form at Costco can lead to some very literal hijinks.
Costco will give you exactly what you know you didn’t need.

On the other side of the coin, some folks have reported seeing the app update roll out as early as August 2025, with one post showing a screenshot of the app where customers can choose the shape of their confection.
“This is awesome news, will save me from an extra $200 shopping trip when I go to drop off the order form for my kid’s birthday cake lol,” one Reddit user remarked.
