Brad Arnold, lead singer of 3 Doors Down, dies at 47

Brad Arnold, a founding member and lead singer of the American rock band 3 Doors Down has died, according to a statement shared Saturday by the band on Instagram. He was 47.

“With heavy hearts, we share the news that Brad Arnold, founder, lead singer, and songwriter of 3 Doors Down, passed away on Saturday, February 7th, at the age of 47,” the post said.

Arnold passed away “peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in his sleep” after a battle with stage four kidney cancer. Arnold announced his diagnosis in May of 2025.

A founding member, vocalist and original drummer of the band, Arnold was behind 2000s hits including breakout song “Kryptonite” as well as “When I’m Gone” and “Here Without You.”

3 Doors Down was formed in 1996 alongside Todd Harrell and Matt Roberts, who died in 2016. Today, the band consists of all new members, with their last album “Us and the Night” released in 2016.

“His music reverberated far beyond the stage, creating moments of connection, joy, faith, and shared experiences that will live on long after the stages he performed on,” the band said.

Arnold first informed fans about his diagnosis in an Instagram video. “I’ve been sick a couple of weeks ago and then went to the hospital,” the 46-year-old said in a joint Instagram post with band members Chris Henderson, Greg Upchurch, Chet Roberts and Justin Biltonen, “and got it checked out and had actually got the diagnosis that I had clear cell renal [cell] carcinoma.” Arnold also explained that his cancer had metastasized in his lungs.

Arnold is survived by his wife, Jennifer Sanderford.

“Those closest to him will remember not only his talent, but his warmth, humility, faith, and deep love for his family and friends,” said the statement.

Fellow rock musicians shared messages of love in the comments.

“Sending my love to the Arnold family. Rest easy brother. You will be missed💜💜💜,” commented Chris Daughtry.

The official account of the band Creed shared sentiments: “Sending love to the Arnold and 3DD family.”

“We are so very sorry. Brad was always such a top notch, class act to us. Even before we were anything at all- he supported us. Such a huge loss and our prayers go out to his family and band ❤️,” wrote the official account of Black Stone Cherry.
