Miley Cyrus and her longtime boyfriend Maxx Morando are taking the next step in their relationship.
After four years of dating, the couple recently got engaged, as confirmed by The New York Times.
Cyrus, 33, showed off her engagement ring at the Los Angeles premiere of “Avatar: Fire and Ash” while posing on the red carpet with Morando, a 27-year-old music producer and drummer for the band Liily.
Jacquie Aiche designed the ring, TODAY.com can confirm.
The ring appears to feature a cushion-cut diamond between four and five carats, according to jewelry experts TODAY.com interviewed.
Laura Taylor, a jeweler specializing in engagement and wedding rings at Lorel Diamonds, says cushion-cut diamonds have a “romantic, vintage feel” and are known for “soft corners and broad facets that catch the light with flashes rather than sparkle.”
It’s set in a chunky gold design, which Taylor says has been “making a return” among celebrities – see: Dua Lipa’s recent engagement ring.
The diamond is surrounded by gold, rather than set in prongs, also known as a bezel-style setting.
“Not only does this keep the stone more secure, but it also helps it stand out even more,” Taylor notes.
The pairing of a classic cushion-cut diamond with the bezel setting gives it a “modern, sculptural look,” which suits Cyrus’ style, Taylor says.
The ring aligns with Cyrus’ brand and sense of style for other reasons, jewelers say.
Ashleigh Bergman, the founder of Milestones by Ashleigh Bergman, says while the setting is classic, it’s not “classically bridal” — which “conversely makes it super modern.”
“It’s edgy (for bridal), but clean,” she says.
Page Neal, co-founder of Bario Neal, calls the ring “modern, unfussy, bold, and deeply self-assured.”
“It has the feeling of a piece chosen for the present moment in her life, not an echo of the past,” Neal says.
Neal sees the ring speaking to various trends within the jewelry space, including a shift toward elongated shapes like ovals and marquises; east-west settings and the rise of low, wearable profiles.
Jewelers who spoke to TODAY.com estimate the ring costing between $100,000 and $500,000, depending on factors like provenance of the stone, color, clarity and carat size.
While speaking with People, Cyrus offered the following thoughts on her engagement.
“The detail that I can share is that for us, our privacy and us kind of keeping it small has been something that I’ve been astounded that I’ve actually been able to have and being able to kind of have more choice,” she says.
Cyrus also explained why she thinks she and Morando have mostly been able to avoid the spotlight, saying, “I think it’s also being older, being more protective of what I’m open to sharing.”
