Kylie Kelce may be the current wife (and former girlfriend) of NFL standout Jason Kelce, but don’t call her a WAG.
The term WAG, an acronym for wives and girlfriends, is typically used in relation to the high-profile women associated with professional athletes. Kelce, however, isn’t fond of the term.
In fact, she gave a rather pointed comment during the NFL edition of The Chat from WhatsApp and OffBall. She and comedian Caleb Hearon were live chatting during the Nov. 24 Kansas City Chiefs versus Indianapolis Colts game.
Emma Samocki, known as “Queen Emma” to fans of Kelce’s “Not Gonna Lie” podcast, asked Kelce to address a question from the chat: “WAGs is a dumb name. So what should NFL spouses be called?”
Kelce typed: “Oooooo!! How about their names!”
It isn’t the first time this mom of four young daughters has responded to this type of question.
On the Feb. 11 episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, host Alex Cooper asked Kelce how she felt about the term WAG.
“I don’t like it. I think it has a serious negative connotation attached. It’s this suggestion that your spouse’s profession swallows you up as well,” Kelce said. “I have made a serious effort to make sure that — both Jason and I have made a serious effort — that while he was playing that it was clear that that was his job.”
Kelce previously expressed her dislike of the term on the Feb. 20 episode of her own “Not Gonna Lie” podcast.
“I personally do not identify as a WAG,” she told her fashion designer guest Kristin Juszczyk.
“So often I think the term WAG pigeonholes women,” she said. “I think there are some women, very sadly, who get sucked into that hole of thinking they should be defined by their spouse’s or their significant other’s role on the team.”
Kelce, however, is redefining her own role as the wife of a former NFL player through her very honest depiction of motherhood, entrepreneurship and advocacy.
One Instagram comment really sums up the Kelce fans’ feelings about Kylie’s response: “‘How about their names.’ Bar. Absolute bar.”
