It can hard for Selena Gomez to enjoy life’s happy moments.
The “Only Murders in the Building” star — a longtime mental health advocate — shared her surprising reaction to marrying Benny Blanco, explaining how her fears sometimes cloud her mindset.
“I got married and then I was sobbing,” Gomez said at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women conference Oct. 15, “’cause I was like, ‘I’m gonna die the next day.'”
The Rare Beauty founder explained that when something great happens in her life, she expects “something bad” to happen as well.
“So instead of being present and saying, ‘OK, wow, we’ve done a great thing,’ which I do, but I’m always thinking, ‘OK, but this could all go away tomorrow. So how can I make sure that doesn’t happen?'” the 33-year-old said. “And I can just get wrapped up in that as opposed to enjoying things. And I would say that’s my biggest conflict sometimes, when wonderful things happen.”

Gomez and Blanco married Sept. 27 in a California wedding in front of their loved ones. Days later, the “Wizards of Waverly Place” star referenced their “joyful moment” in a message to her fans.
“As I step into one of the most special seasons of my life, I can’t help but think of you, my incredible friends who have been with me through every twist, turn, and chapter,” she wrote on Instagram Oct. 2. “From my first days on screen to the songs we’ve sung together, and now to this new beginning, your love and support have meant more to me than I could ever truly put into words.”
And Gomez did recently express renewed hope for more positive milestones to come in the future — including starting a family with Blanco, despite previously noting that she would be unable to carry a pregnancy for health reasons.
“Alex Russo is a mommy,” the “Love You Like a Love Song” singer wrote about her Disney Channel character over an Instagram clip from sequel series “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” Oct. 9. “Hopefully one day that’ll be me.”
