A cat who was shot with a blowgun dart received emergency medical treatment on Monday at the Good Karma Pet Rescue in Fort Lauderdale.

Caregivers at the rescue said a woman who regularly feeds a colony of cats in Hallandale Beach first noticed that he had been shot with a dart about a week ago. The woman told them the cat was hiding in the bushes, terrified, and wouldn’t come out.

They said it took several days to trap the cat and bring him in so they could remove the 5-inch dart.

“It’s really hard for me to understand what goes through a person’s mind when they’re trying, when they’re doing something like this to an animal. We see a lot of mistreatment of animals here, and you know, I don’t understand why. I don’t understand the mindset of somebody that would do something like that,” Dr. Pete Otovic, a veterinarian at Good Karma Pet Rescue, said

Otovic said he believes the cat, who doesn’t have a name yet, should make a full recovery.

“Our goal for this guy now is to actually bring him into the rescue and find him a good medical foster who can take care of him until he can heal. Hopefully we can make him adoptable in the near future,” he said.

The rescue said they have no idea who shot him and hope that someone with information comes forward.
