Larry David has a new show coming out, and it should be pretty, prettyyy, prettyyyyyy good.
The “Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator and star is returning to HBO with a sketch comedy show about American history, the network announced Thursday.
David, a history buff, will even be getting some assistance from a former president and first lady — with Barack and Michelle Obama serving among the executive producers from their company Higher Ground Productions.
“President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion….But then Larry David called,” reads the show’s official logline.
The network has not announced a title or release date for the limited half-hour series. It will be written by David and Jeff Schaffer, who have worked together on both “Seinfeld” and “Curb.”
David, the “Seinfeld” co-creator, made his HBO debut on “Curb” in 2000. The series ran – on and off — for a total of 12 seasons before its final episode aired in 2024.
“Once ‘Curb’ ended, I celebrated with a three-day foam party,” David joked in a statement. “After a violent allergic reaction to the suds, I yearned to return to my simple life as a beekeeper, harvesting organic honey from the wildflowers in my meadow. Alas, one day my bees mysteriously vanished. And so, it is with a heavy heart that I return to television, hoping to ease the loss of my beloved hive.”
David’s new series will include appearances by “Curb” cast members and other celebrity guests.
“It’s hard to remember a time before ‘Curb,’ or without Larry David’s perspective on modern life,” said Amy Gravitt, the executive vice president and head of HBO and HBO Max comedy programming. “We’re thrilled that Larry is coming back to HBO, this time with Higher Ground, to give us a glimpse at our shared history as we celebrate our Semiquincentennial.”
One of David’s new executive producers, a prominent figure in American history himself, also sounds pretty, prettyyy, prettyyyyyy thrilled.
“I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems,” former President Barack Obama said in a statement. “Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.”
