Savannah Guthrie is opening up for the first time about the “agony” of her mother’s abduction in an interview with Hoda Kotb on TODAY.
In an excerpt of the upcoming interview that aired on TODAY on March 25, the TODAY co-anchor shared in an emotional talk with Hoda how she wakes up every night imagining her mother’s “terror” following her disappearance.
Savannah’s full interview with Hoda will air in two parts on TODAY on Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27.
In the preview clip, Hoda asks Savannah how her family is coping after her 84-year-old mother was taken from her Arizona home and reported missing on Feb. 1.
“Someone needs to do the right thing,” a tearful Savannah said. “We are in agony. It is unbearable. And to think of what she went through.”
“I wake up every night in the middle of the night, every night,” she continued. “And in the darkness, I imagine her terror. And it is unthinkable, but those thoughts demand to be thought. And I will not hide my face. But she needs to come home now.”
Savannah has been with her family in Arizona amid the ongoing search for her mom. Hoda has been at the anchor desk on TODAY alongside Craig Melvin in Savannah’s absence.
Savannah’s most recent appearance on the show came on Jan. 30, two days before Nancy was reported missing to police.
The co-anchor returned to New York City on March 6 to make an emotional visit to the TODAY studio at Rockefeller Center to express her gratitude to her colleagues.
“I wanted you to know that I’m still standing, and I still have hope, and I’m still me,” she told the staff. “And I don’t know what version of me that will be, but it will be.”
“I’m holding onto my faith,” she added. “I still believe.”
The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has now stretched into its eighth week.
The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been investigating leads and sifting through thousands of tips. Authorities have been trying to identify an armed and masked man seen on doorbell camera images released by the FBI in front of Nancy Guthrie’s home the night she disappeared.
Neighbors told NBC News on March 18 that investigators have visited their homes and asked about specific dates, primarily the weekend Nancy disappeared, as well as Jan. 11.
The Guthrie family is offering a $1 million reward for the return of Nancy. The FBI is also offering a $100,000 reward and encouraging anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
