Trump’s pick for FTC commissioner drops $68M on third Manalapan estate

David MacNeil, the founder of WeatherTech, dropped $68.3 million on a third oceanfront estate in Manalapan.

It brings his total spend on property in the small coastal enclave to $162.3 million. Records show MacNeil bought the mansion at 1940 South Ocean Boulevard from Frank and Dolores Mennella.

Philip Lyle Smith and Carla Ferreira-Smith with Luxury Resort Portfolio had the listing, and Margit Brandt with Premier Estate Properties brought the buyer.

MacNeil has a net worth of $4 billion, according to Forbes. In January, President Donald Trump tapped him to serve on the Federal Trade Commission, and his appointment is awaiting confirmation. He also owns a car collection worth $400 million, Forbes reported.

MacNeil has been on a South Florida real estate spending spree in recent years. Last year, he bought the 1.6-acre estate at 1140 South Ocean Boulevard for $55.5 million. It is adjacent to the 2-acre compound at 1120 South Ocean Boulevard he bought for $38.5 million in 2024.

MacNeil also owns a half-acre waterfront compound in Fort Lauderdale which he bought for $5.5 million in 2013, records show. It is on the market asking $40 million, Zillow shows.

The Mennellases bought the 1.9-acre ocean-to-Intracoastal estate at 1940 South Ocean Boulevard for $7.5 million in 2018. They built the 10,500-square-foot mansion in 2022, and it has six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, four half-bathrooms, a gym, spa facilities, a theater, game room, craft room, two bowling alleys, a dock and a tunnel to the beach.

They listed it for $84.9 million in May, shortly after spending a record $48 million on a mansion in Jupiter’s Bear’s Club. In 2023, they sold another oceanfront Manalapan mansion for $48.4 million.

The Mennellases’ and MacNeils’ recent real estate activity in Manalapan is a window into the rapid ascension of the small town amongst South Florida’s top luxury markets. Agents say buyers see Manalapan as an appealing alternative to nearby Palm Beach. Manalapan has an abundance of oceanfront estates that also have dockage on the Intracoastal Waterway, and at lower prices than in Palm Beach.

Billionaire Randal Kirk recently found a buyer for his oceanfront Manalapan mansion after dropping the price from $134 million to $90 million.
