Traffic is being diverted off Interstate 595 in Davie after fuel began to spill from a truck involved in a crash that forced officials to shut down westbound lanes of the highway on Wednesday morning, according to officials.
According to Davie fire officials, the crash involved two vehicles, including a fuel tanker, in the westbound lanes of I-595 east of Davie Road.
According to information provided by the Florida Highway Patrol, a tanker truck that was transporting fuel rear ended a van and then rolled onto its side, spilling a majority of the 4,000 gallons of fuel it was carrying onto the highway.
In addition, FHP said a semi-truck swerved to try and avoid the crash and ended up hitting the tanker and then another vehicle.
Two drivers were taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries, according to FHP.
Officials said that traffic is now being rerouted onto US 441 and drivers are being asked to avoid the area if possible.
FHP said that the Broward Sheriff’s Office fire technical recue was at the scene and was attempting to stop the fuel leak, which has reached the drainage system.
The Florida Highway Patrol Commercial Vehicle Enforcement has also been notified of the situation and was headed to the scene.
No other information was released.
