A public memorial to celebrate the life of Bob Weir, one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, was held in San Francisco.
Weir, a founding member of the Grateful Dead whose rhythm guitar work, songwriting and tireless touring helped push traditional American blues and folk music into the modern era, died earlier this month. He was 78.
A statement about his death posted on his official website said Weir had been diagnosed with cancer in July, beat it, but succumbed to “underlying lung issues.”
Saturday’s memorial was held from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. at the Civic Center Plaza. A crowd of thousands of people gathered to celebrate the legendary rhythm guitarist, songwriter and life adventurer.
There was a procession traveling three blocks down Market Street, between 7th and 9th streets. It started at around 12:30 p.m.
Anyone planning to attend the memorial should enter through Fulton Plaza. Public transportation or rideshare services is also recommended as parking in the area will be limited.
