The Broward Sheriff’s Office said Interstate 95 south will be closed until further notice in Pompano Beach after a police chase ended in a crash on Friday morning.
Few details have been released, but the BSO said deputies responded to reports of a theft at a local business near the 300 block of West Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach around 11 a.m.
According to investigators, while deputies were at the scene, the suspect — later identified as Avonta Bailey — attacked a deputy and then fled the scene in a vehicle.
A pursuit then began but ended in a crash on I-95 south just north of Atlantic Boulevard, BSO said.
Bailey was taken into custody and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries when his car flipped during the crash. CBS News Miami is still working to learn how it turned over.
Baile is facing a list of charges, including theft, resisting with and without violence, fleeing and eluding, aggravated fleeing, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery on a law officer.
Traffic was left at a standstill during the investigation
Officials said that I-95 south at Atlantic Boulevard would be shut down until further notice, and motorists are being asked to avoid the area and seek an alternate route.
The interstate turned into a parking lot, frustrating several drivers who spoke with CBS News Miami.
“It was stopped,” one driver said. “There was nowhere to go.”
Drivers say they were stuck, just crawling along.
“I just spent almost 40 minutes,” said another driver. “I go to Boca [Raton] — I go to FAU — it took me almost an hour to get here.”
No other information was released.
