Jon Hamm dancing with his eyes closed has taken over social media.
Online, the clip has been used to show people being transported to another place from pleasure or nostalgia. They tilt their head back and bam — they’re in Jon Hamm-land.
In one TikTok video, a woman takes a bite of ramen. Then, when she throws her head back to savor the flavor, the clip cuts to Hamm in the club.
Another TikTok user used the viral clip to show the pleasure of being an introvert. “Me in public when someone I know doesn’t spot me,” he said. Then, once he appears to be in the clear, the TikTok user throws his head back in relief as the clip cuts to Hamm dancing.
The applications are endless: The joy of putting your kids to bed, having someone else cover dinner or even the divorce being finalized.
It’s also often used to show the passage of time and people longing for their old party-going ways, as one person pointed to in a video that compared what she used to do before starting work to what she does now.
We can thank a scene from Hamm’s Apple TV+ show, “Your Friends And Neighbors,” for the trend. In Episode 8 of the series, Hamm’s character Andrew Cooper dances in a packed club. The camera trains in on his face and his shoulders swaying back and forth.
The show is a dark comedy that stars Hamm as a hedge fund manager who resorts to burglary after losing his job. While targeting the rich, he uses their funds to maintain his family’s lifestyle.
In episode 8 of the series, Hamm is seen dancing alone in a club as a way to temporarily tune out the chaos in his life.
In an April interview on TODAY, Hamm spoke about his show and said he relates to his character because he used to steal books from the bookstore chain Waldenbooks when he was a child.
“That was the best way to get books. I didn’t have any money,” he joked.
This new trend on TikTok is accompanied by the song “Turn The Lights Off” by DJ Kato and Jon Nørgaard. The duo released the track in 2010. After learning it went viral, DJ Kato made his own video using the Hamm edit where he showed how “surreal” it was to have the “No. 1 viral song in the world.”
“Sorry, but I just had to😜,” he captioned the clip. “This whole thing is so surreal! Thank you so much for listening and creating with the song❤️.”
