A Tamarac man remains hospitalized after he was shot during a confrontation with Broward Sheriff deputies Sunday night.
CBS Miami spoke with the man’s grandmother on Monday.
She said her grandson, whom she identified as 35-year-old David Pagan, was shot in the stomach and foot.
She explained that Pagan has been dealing with pain from a devastating motorcycle crash a few years back, and self-medicates with alcohol and painkillers.
She said on Sunday, Pagan became agitated and started shooting his gun inside of the house. When he went outside, she called 911.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a shooting near the 7800 block of NW 74th Avenue just after 9 p.m.
The grandmother told CBS News Miami that she didn’t see what happened outside when the deputies arrived, and said she doesn’t know if Pagan fired at them.
“He has a license (for the gun). But has never threatened anyone. No issues,” she said.
When asked why deputies shot Pagan, she said, “I guess they told him to drop the gun, and he didn’t.”
BSO said its office is piecing together what led to the confrontation and deputy-involved shooting.
“BSO crime scene investigators… and FDLE is involved,” said BSO spokeswoman Gerdy St. Louis.
The deputies involved in the shooting are on leave, as is protocol.
