After their first date, Colin Jost thought Scarlett Johansson just wasn’t that into him.
But the “Black Widow” actress admitted that she didn’t let her true feelings show during her first meet up with the “Saturday Night Live” comedian, noting she was completely out of her element.
“Nobody had ever asked me out before,” Johansson reflected while co-hosting “TODAY with Jenna & Friends” on Dec. 1. “I was a serial monogamist and I never got the sort of traditional like, ‘Hey would you like to have dinner sometime?’”
But when the “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” host took a shot, Johansson — who shares daughter Rose, 11, with ex Romain Dauriac as well as son Cosmo, 4, with Jost — made it seem like it was a total airball.
“He actually asked me out on a date,” Johansson recalled. “We went to an Italian restaurant in the East Village. It was a lovely date. We had dinner. Afterward, he was like, ‘I’m meeting friends, let’s go grab a drink,’ and I hadn’t dated basically ever so I was just like, ‘I have to go now.’ I need to leave.’”
Indeed, the 41-year-old — who went on to tie the knot with Jost in 2020 — called it a night after only about 90 minutes.
“I got home to relieve my babysitter and she was like, ‘Why are you home?’ and I was like, ‘I don’t know!’ I just felt so flustered,” she explained, noting she had dropped the wrong impression to her now-husband. “Later he was like, ‘I totally thought that was it. You were acting so weird.’ I panicked. I don’t know.”

For Jost’s part, he noted his very first impression of Johansson back in 2006 on the set of SNL made her seem “beautiful, smart, sweet and intimidatingly sophisticated.”
“She has just turned 20 and I was 23, but in terms of status and maturing she was here [holds hand above head] and I was here [holds hand one inch off ground],” Jost, now 43, wrote in his 2020 memoir, “A Very Punchable Face.” “She claims that she remembers thinking I was ‘cute,’ but I know what I looked like and that’s not the word I would have used. (‘Shaggy’ would have been generous. ‘Slovenly,’ more accurate).”
Nevertheless, the pair obviously hit it off. As Jost noted of their now nearly 10-year romance, “I’ve met someone I love and who I feel more comfortable with than I ever have before.”
Scarlett Johansson spoke with Access Hollywood at the premiere of “The Phoenician Scheme,” and she shared what makes things work with husband Colin Jost.
