Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead Sunday afternoon inside their Brentwood mansion, according to officials.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said a man and a woman were found deceased inside, approximately 78 and 68 years old, around 3:30 p.m. A source close to Reiner has confirmed to NBC News that Reiner and his wife were the pair that was found dead inside the mansion with apparent stab wounds.
LAPD Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton said detectives are not seeking anyone as a suspect or as a person of interest until they conduct their investigation. Hamilton did not release the identities of the victims and added that the LA County Coroner would release that information later.
“Before we do anything here, we have to get a search warrant because there are issues regarding standing at this residence,” said Hamilton. “So as long as those legal requirements are met, we can continue the investigation.”
Hamilton said investigators would obtain the search warrant very soon and added that the death investigation would be handled by the Robbery Homicide Division of the Los Angeles Police Department.
LAPD officers were dispatched to the home shortly after paramedics for a report of an “ambulance death investigation,” which is LAPD terminology when officers are called by firefighters to the discovery of a death.
The Los Angeles Police Department provided an update about two people found dead at the residence of film director Rob Reiner.
Neighbors said Reiner, 78, and his 68-year-old wife live in the home, and property records indicate they own the home. The LAPD statement said it was the Reiners’ home.
The filmmaking legend and his wife, Michele, got married in 1989 and have three children together, Jake, Nick, and Romy.
Tracy Reiner, Rob Reiner’s adopted daughter from his marriage to ex-wife Penny Marshall, said she was speechless upon hearing about their death.
“I came from the greatest family ever,” said Tracey Reiner. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”
Local and state leaders mourned the loss of the married couple.
“Personally, I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele. I knew Rob and have tremendous respect for him. Among his numerous contributions, Rob helped create First 5 California, a landmark initiative funded by a tobacco tax to support early childhood development programs. He and Michele fought for early childhood development and marriage equality, working to overturn Proposition 8. They were true champions for LGBTQ+ rights,” wrote Mayor Karen Bass in a statement.
“Jen and I are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner,” said Gov. Newsom in a statement Sunday. “Rob was the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love, with projects as wide-ranging as ‘The Princess Bride’ to ‘A Few Good Men.’ His boundless empathy made his stories timeless, teaching generations how to see goodness and righteousness in others – and encouraging us to dream bigger.”
“The news of a deadly assault on Rob and Michelle Reiner in their home is devastating. It’s hard to think of anyone more remarkable and excellent in every field and endeavor they pursued. Rob was creative, funny, and beloved. And in all of their endeavors, Michelle was his indispensable partner, intellectual resource, and loving wife,” said Nancy Pelosi.
Reiner is an Oscar-nominated filmmaker and actor known for his films “This Is Spinal Tap,” “A Few Good Men,” and “When Harry Met Sally.”
