Grammy-winning singer-songwriter the Weeknd is in contract to buy a waterfront Gables Estates mansion that’s on the market for $54.9 million, sources told The Real Deal.
The Weeknd, whose legal name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, is buying oil recycling mogul Steven Lempera’s eight-bedroom, nine-and-a-half-bathroom home at 41 Arvida Parkway in Coral Gables, sources told TRD. The 18,963-square-foot mansion sits on a 1.2-acre point lot with a pool, hot tub, outdoor kitchen and dock.
The property went under contract in September. It’s on the market with Eddy Martinez and Roland Ortiz of One Sotheby’s International Realty. The purchase price is unknown.
Lempera, the former president of Future Environmental, sold his company to Patrick Dovigi’s waste management giant GFL Environmental in 2018. The following year, he paid $25.5 million for the Gables Estates property at auction. The mansion was completed in 2018.
Tesfaye was in the market for a waterfront mansion in this price range and neighborhood, sources said. The deal marks his first publicly known real estate purchase in South Florida.
In 2021, he paid $70 million for a mansion in Bel Air, marking the priciest residential deal in Los Angeles that year.
Gables Estates was recently named the most expensive neighborhood in the U.S., topping Beverly Hills, according to Zillow.
In late August, attorney Anthony Lopez and his fiancée, former “Real Housewives of Miami” star, Dr. Nicole Martin, bought the waterfront mansion at 33 Arvida Parkway in the same Coral Gables neighborhood following their recent sale of a nearby estate. The couple paid $34 million for the property, which was on the market for $47 million.
One community away in Old Cutler Bay, Lopez and Martin sold the 19,380-square-foot, seven-bedroom home at 555 Reinante Avenue for $40 million to English singer-songwriter Robbie Williams.
Tesfaye, known for hits that include “Blinding Lights” and “Can’t Feel My Face,” won’t be the only celebrity musician in Gables Estates. In 2020, Pharrell Williams paid $30 million for the 7,466-square-foot waterfront house at 700 Casuarina Concourse.
