Halloween-related household spending is expected to hit a record $13.1 billion dollars, with $3.9 billion of that spent just on candy, according to the National Retail Federation.
Figuring out exactly how much candy to buy can be tricky. You don’t want to face disappointed trick-or-treaters if you run out, but also want to avoid piles of leftover fun-size chocolate bars.

What is the most popular Halloween candy in 2025?
According to an Innerbody report analyzing Google search data of all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the most popular candy is Starburst, ranking as the most popular search in 13 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin). Followed by Sour Patch Kids in eight states (Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington), then Reese’s in four states (Iowa, Utah, Vermont, Wyoming), along with Skittles (Arkansas, Georgia, Nebraska, Virginia).
The fifth most commonly searched candy is Sour Punch Straws, followed by Jolly Ranchers, Swedish Fish, Twix, Blow Pops and Lifesavers.
The only two chocolate-based candies in the top 10 are Reeces and Twix, with Americans seemingly leaning more towards sour candies, with Sour Patch Kids and Sour Punch Straws both in the top six.
What is the least popular Halloween candy in 2025?
Americans have spoken and the candy with the least appeal is Hot Tamales — except for in New Mexico where it’s a favorite.
Also in the bottom is Salt Water Taffy, Milky Way, and Blow Pops (despite being a favorite in two states). But the two states, New Mexico and South Dakota, that like Blow Pops have a mutual dislike for Dubble Bubble, which also falls in the bottom six of candies.
