Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk's '900' skateboard sells for record $1.15M at auction

Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk’s “900” skateboard from the 1999 X Games has sold for over $1 million, an amount that Julien’s Auctions says is record-breaking.

The original Birdhouse Falcon 2 “900” skateboard sold for $1.15 million Wednesday, which set a new benchmark for skateboarding memorabilia, according to Julien’s Auction.

“We are honored to witness him make history once again, and extend our gratitude to Tony Hawk, the Loews Hollywood Hotel, and to every bidder who made this day unforgettable,” Julien’s Auction said on a social media post.

As a pioneer of modern vertical, or so-called “vert” skateboarding, Hawk cemented his place in sports history when he landed the first-ever documented “900” — a trick involving two-and-a-half mid-air revolutions. After several failed attempts, Hawk landed the move in front of a roaring 1999 X Games crowd.

Tony Hawk was in attendance at the auction. The buyer was not disclosed.

Other items from his personal collection were also up for auction.

This is the first time I’ve been personally involved in every aspect of selling my own items.” Hawk recently shared with People Magazine, adding, “I chose pieces from my collection that are not only meaningful to me, but also to a collector seeking a special ‘One of One’ like the ‘900’ deck.”

The highlight of the 900 Collection is the original board and gear Hawk wore when he landed that first 900. Also on the auction block: The original Birdhouse Falcon 2 skateboard he was riding when he landed the trick — estimated to fetch as much as $700,000.

Also available: signed and worn gear from those 1999 X Games; sportswear from the 2002 Olympics; a 1982 Powell-Peralta signature pro model skateboard, the first pro model Hawk ever rode; a Simpsons-themed winter coat Hawk received after he did a voiceover for the 2003 episode “Barting Over”; and more than 100 other collectibles curated by The Birdman himself.

“A lot of this stuff is really important to [Tony Hawk], and it’s meant something for a very long time, but at this point, he has collected stuff over the years and just felt it was time to move on from that,” said Kody Frederick, director and head of marketing at Julien’s Auctions.

According to Frederick, more than a million dollars is expected to be raised, a portion of which will go to The Skatepark Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to outdoor recreation and building inclusive skate parks for youth in underserved communities. Founded by Hawk in 2002, the organization has helped construct nearly 700 public skateparks across all 50 states.
