Pete Davidson needed brutal honesty to get him to a better place.
The “Saturday Night Live” alum, who has been sober for more than a year, shared how his mom Amy Waters Davidson encouraged him to clean up his act for good.
“My mom’s the most supportive person in the world,” Pete shared during a Sept. 23 appearance on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast. “And it got to a point where she called me when I was in rehab and she was like, ‘My biggest fear is that I will turn on the news and I’ll see that my son has died.’”
For the 31-year-old — who is expecting his first child with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt — the phone call was admittedly jarring.
“She’s so supportive and wants to always have positivity around,” he explained. “That killed me. So I was like, ‘Alright, can’t die until she’s dead.’”
Indeed, since the death of his dad Scott Davidson during the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the comedian refuses to let his mom experience any more heartbreak.

As he put it, “I’d have to be a f—— sociopath to not get my s— together.”
Amy — also mom to Casey Davidson, 28 — was one of many people who have helped him begin his sobriety journey.
“Anybody that’s actually loved me and cared about me has gotten the worst wrath from me,” he explained. “Like, ‘F— you, leave me. Go ahead, leave me.’”
However, he soon realized his inner circle wasn’t willing to put up with what he called his “deranged” behavior.
“I was like, ‘Oh s— you’re calling my bluff,’” he recalled. “And I love you and I don’t want you to go away.”
And now, he’s happy his lowest lows have brought him to his highest highs.
As he and Hewitt prepare to welcome their baby, “thank God I’m sober and where I am,” he said. “I’m very grateful that it happened now and with Elsie.”
Starting a family has been Pete’s goal for a long time, and without sobriety, he added, “There’s no f—— way that was possible.”
