Why Pete Davidson says 'SNL50' audience was simply 'terrible'

Pete Davidson found the “SNL50” audience to be a big time letdown.

The comedian was one of the many alums who returned to “Saturday Night Live” for its 50th anniversary special back in February, and he isn’t holding back when it comes to sharing his opinion of the star-studded audience for the live taping.

“As you know from SNL40 — terrible audience,” Davidson told Seth Meyers on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” August 7. “It’s a terrible audience ’cause it’s just famous people, and famous people only like themselves.”

As the audience at Meyers’ show started to laugh, Davidson doubled down on his claim, maintaining, “It’s true! I’m guilty of this!”

Indeed, Meyers made fun of Davidson for being “the only one laughing” in the audience while watching a pre-taped sketch that he appeared in during the special, which the “King of Staten Island” actor confirmed.

But while in general Davidson was underwhelmed by the high-profile audience’s response to the show, one high part for him was being seated next to Meryl Streep.

“Meryl rules,” he said. “In typical ‘SNL’ fashion, they don’t tell you anything. You don’t even know what’s going on. I get to my seat and I just look and I’m like, ‘This can’t be right.’ And it was Meryl Streep.”

The 31-year-old added, “I just sat down and I was like, ‘I’m so sorry that I’m sitting next to you. You’re the best.’”

As for how the “It’s Complicated” actress responded? “She was very nice,” Davidson recalled. “She was just like, ‘No, no, no.'”

The “Dumb Money” actor’s reflection on his return to “SNL” comes amid an exciting new chapter as he and his girlfriend Elsie Hewitt announced that she’s pregnant and expecting her first child with Davidson.

And a “very lucky and very, very happy” Davidson later told E! News what he sees fatherhood looking like.

Specifically, he’s looking forward to “being able to take care of something and show it the childhood I didn’t have. I assume you just try to give them what you didn’t have, and what you didn’t like, not do it.”

(E! and NBC are both part of the NBCU family.)

Pete Davidson can’t wait to be a dad. “The Home” star and director James DeMonaco spoke with Access Hollywood at the premiere of the film, and they shared about working on the project. Pete, who is expecting his first child with Elsie Hewitt, also talked about fatherhood.
