Alicia Silverstone shares 1 'goal' of doing 'Clueless' series: 'I'm really excited about it'

Alicia Silverstone can’t give fans any hints about the plot of the upcoming “Clueless” series just yet, but her enthusiasm for the reboot should have Cher Horowitz fans totally buggin’.

The actor, who played the iconic Beverly Hills teen in the classic 1995 movie, shared her hopes for the series in which she will reprise her role and also serve as executive producer.

Savannah Guthrie asked her on TODAY on Aug. 7 what she could divulge about the series after it was reported in April that the film was becoming a show on Peacock.

“Not much,” she said before laughing. “I’m really excited about it. I think we’re going to try really hard. The goal is to make it honor what everyone loves about ‘Clueless’ and Cher.”

“So we want to honor that, but also bring something fresh and new to it,” she continued. “I’m confident that we’ll be able to do that, but we’re in baby stages right now.”

The film was previously made into a series that ran for three seasons on multiple networks from 1996-99, but Silverstone was not a part of it. Stacey Dash, who plays Cher’s best friend Dee Davenport, and Donald Faison, who plays Dee’s boyfriend, Murray Duvall, did appear in it.

It’s been 30 years since Silverstone, 48, played the shopping-obsessed, bad-driving, hopelessly romantic Cher in “Clueless.” The modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel “Emma” set at a ’90s high school in Beverly Hills has become a touchstone for a generation.

“People always say, ‘Oh, you must be so sick of it.’ But what’s there to be sick of? People liking the movie you’re in? It truly doesn’t get better,” Silverstone told Vogue in 2020.

Her first interview on TODAY came in 1995 when she was 18 and the movie had become a sensation. Silverstone rewatched a portion of her appearance on Aug. 7 while talking with Savannah.

“I mean Cher is so confident, but I was very shy,” Silverstone reflected about that time. “Especially then. I think I still am, but there I remember just some of the interviews are so funny.”

Fans looking to see Silverstone on the screen can catch her in her new series “Irish Blood,” which premieres on Aug. 11 on Acorn TV. She plays a Los Angeles attorney who travels to Ireland to find her estranged father, only to stumble upon his shady past.
