Why Emma Watson has been banned from driving for 6 months

Emma Watson must’ve forgotten that most muggles aren’t accustomed to seeing a flying car.

Indeed, the “Harry Potter” alum has had her U.K. driver’s license revoked for six months after she was caught going eight miles over a 30-mph speed limit around the Oxford campus last year, the BBC reported from the High Wycombe Magistrates court July 16.

Watson, 35, had previously had nine points — or traffic violations — on her license, the court said, per the BBC, and in addition to the suspension, she was ordered to pay roughly $1,400 in fines. “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” actress did not attend the July 15 hearing, although her lawyer, Mark Haslam, told the court, per the BBC, that she is a student and, “is in a position to pay the fine.”

E! News has reached out to Watson’s rep for comment regarding the incident but has not yet heard back.

Meanwhile, Watson’s former costar Zoe Wanamaker, who played Madam Hooch in the first “Harry Potter” film back in 2001, coincidentally earned the exact same violation at High Wycombe Magistrates court, just minutes after Watson’s case was heard.

Wanamaker, for her part, had stacked up 12 points on her license and was called to court for driving six miles over in a 40 mph zone. She was ordered to pay around $800 in fines, as well as an additional $487 in surcharges, per The Sun.

“She’s not seeking any special treatment,” Wanamaker’s lawyer Duncan Jones told the court, per The Sun. “She accepts she will be disqualified from driving.”

Aside from her recent traffic violation, Watson has kept a relatively low profile amid her studies at Oxford since 2023, where she is pursuing a U.K. equivalent of a PhD, the Daily Mail reported earlier this year.

Amid her studies, however, Watson has also taken up a role on the prestigious university’s rowing team, and was spotted performing as a coxswain during the team’s recent competition on the Thames River last month.

In photographs, obtained by the Daily Mail, Watson sported a white baseball hat, sunglasses and a mini mic, which she used to guide her eight rowers through the competition.

And while Watson has not appeared in a film since Greta Gerwig’s Little Women in 2019, she has spoken previously about how rewarding the break from acting has been for her.

“I’m so glad that I allowed things to be messy for a minute,” she told British Vogue in 2023, “and to really allow myself to not know, because the knowing that I’ve come to, I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”

“Harry Potter” fans and celebrities around the world are mourning the death of Robbie Coltrane.
