Tyler Cameron on building spec homes, the Jupiter boom and the Bachelor Nation-to-realtor pipeline

Tyler Cameron rose to fame on the hit dating show, “The Bachelorette,” and now he’s throwing his hat into the real estate sales ring.

Cameron joined Serhant’s Jupiter office, the firm announced earlier this week. State records show he is now a fully licensed broker. While he is a newbie agent, he is not new to the real estate industry. A born and bred Jupiter local, he moved home in 2020 following the sudden death of his mother, and started a homebuilding business that was featured on the show “Coming Home with Tyler Cameron.” Between learning the ropes of contracting and making appearances on “Saturday Night Live,” he’s also invested in spec homes and short-term rentals.

Given his reality TV chops, it begs the question whether this next venture will be televised as well.

The Real Deal caught up with Cameron to chat about his portfolio, getting into the agent business and the Bachelor Nation-to-realtor pipeline.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

So I read you started your construction business, Image 1 Construction, after moving back to Jupiter and have been renovating homes. What kinds of projects have you focused on so far, and what’s the learning curve been like?

I got to build and renovate a lot of homes. I’ve enjoyed that business a lot. There’s a gigantic learning curve, it’s an expensive way to learn, too.

The problem is I travel so much for work. I’m great at building spec homes, and renovating my own properties, but it’s harder for me to do that for other homes.

A lot of people start businesses in this industry, but few have to play out those early years on camera. What’s that been like?

That was fun. You guys witnessed me in real time make my mistakes and learn as I go.

I told my team, I want people to see me learn, [to see] the good and the bad from home renovations.

I understand you’re also investing in properties, can you walk me through what your portfolio looks like these days and what your strategy is?

Right now I have four short-term rentals. I’m about to build two more ground-up homes, I also have a property management side to what I do, another six homes there. By the end of the year I should be around 10 to 12, depending on how long the new builds take.

[I’ve also] done some investing in Jacksonville, that’s another market I really like. You definitely get more bang for your buck in Jacksonville –– it’s a growing city and there are a lot of things happening there.

It has to be said that Jupiter, and South Florida in general, have changed so much since you grew up there. The luxury market has exploded in the past few years. As a local and a newly minted agent, what do you think about the growth? How is it shaping your business?

Well I think the growth of Jupiter, for me being a younger guy, I love seeing it. We have such beautiful homes now in town, such great restaurants. I enjoy it. It gives us a lot more life.

Jupiter is becoming expensive, so now Hobe Sound is the next one to go to. [The growth] is going to go even more north — Port St. Lucie has exploded.

So when did you decide to make the jump to sales and get your license?

The real reason I fell in love with this is I was already doing [it]. Any new listing that was coming up, I was always on Zillow, I’d pass them off to my friends. I was definitely brewing on it for a while, it was just about finding a break in my time to go do it.

I’ve been pretty on fire, it’s been a lot of work. I finally found a gap, and I tried the online courses, but I was getting nowhere with the online courses. I went and locked in for a week, and studied my butt off. It was timing. It’s the right time for it now.

I know your mom was a broker with the Keyes Company in Jupiter, is there anything you learned from her you’ll be taking with you into the work?

I have it framed, a letter from one of her clients, about how above and beyond she went for her clients. I used to always get on her case –– she’d make a sale for some lady, and be taking her to the doctors and this and that.

She took care of those people. If I can take that with me, that’ll help me go far.

Do you have your first listing lined up yet?

So, I have a few buyers already. I’m definitely going to try and get those people settled, and help them purchase their homes first. The listing I’ve got to earn.

There seems to be a bit of a Bachelor Nation-to-real estate pipeline: Jason and Molly Mesnick, Tammy Kay Ly and Kate Gallivan are a few that come to mind. Do you think experience on the show primes people for real estate careers in a way?

Definitely when you get off the show, you’re out there for the public. So much of the public wants to come and meet you, you’re naturally networking and meeting people. If you’re doing it, you might as well add a service to it.

Obviously, you have a lot of experience on screen. Would you consider doing an Owning Florida type of show with Serhant? What do you think that would look like?

That would be fun, I enjoy TV a lot. But before I even go down that route, I have a ton to prove in the office. That’s not even a thought of mine –– I’ve got to sell. I’m actually really trying to do this. I’m actually really trying to make a name for myself, and right now I’m in last place.
