Chuck Mangione, famed flugelhorn and trumpet player, dead at 84

Two-time Grammy-winning musician Chuck Mangione has died at the age of 84.

His attorney confirmed to NBC affiliate WHEC that Mangione died in his sleep Tuesday, July 22, at his home in Rochester, New York.

The internationally-acclaimed flugelhorn and trumpet player had a career spanning 60 years, beginning when he formed the Jazz Brothers as a teenager all the way to the recording of his biggest hit “Feels So Good” in 1978.

That song reached as high as No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammys, propelling Mangione’s career.

Two years later, he was composing and performing “Give it All You Got” — the theme song for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid where the “Miracle on Ice” U.S. men’s hockey team won the gold medal.

A native of Rochester, Mangione was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame in 2012.

His brother, Gap, who he founded the Jazz Brothers with when they were teens, was inducted in 2015 for his work as a pianist.
