It’s World Emoji Day and Apple is celebrating with the launch of a new game.
Similar to Wordle, the Emoji Game challenges users to decode short phrases by using emojis.
According to Apple, new puzzles will be available daily for Apple News+ subscribers. Users will have to solve three words or phrases using a selection of pictograms, logograms, ideograms or smilies that appears at the bottom of the screen.
“Emoji Game is the perfect addition to the Apple News+ suite of word and number puzzles, turning the emoji we use every day into a brainteaser that’s approachable and fun,” said Lauren Kern, editor-in-chief of Apple News.
The Apple News+ subscription costs $12.99 and is shareable with up to six family members.
World Emoji Day: Why it’s celebrated on July 17
World Emoji Day is celebrated annually on July 17. That’s because on July 17, 2002, Apple unveiled its iCal app at MacWorld 2002. The iOS calendar emoji 📅 is a daily flip calendar set to July 17, the app’s “birthday.”
In past years, Apple has marked the day with the release of new emoji characters to join the growing list of thousands of emojis currently available on iOS.
