1 dead, 1 in custody following NW Miami shooting; police investigate possible self-defense claim

A man is dead and another has been taken into custody following a shooting Friday afternoon in Northwest Miami, where the alleged shooter remained at the scene and claimed self-defense, according to police.

Authorities said they recovered three firearms, detained the alleged gunman and continue to investigate what led to the deadly confrontation.

Shooting and immediate response

Shortly before 2:05 p.m., Miami-Dade Police received an alert from their ShotSpotter system indicating multiple shots fired near the intersection of Northwest 4th Avenue and 71st Street, according to police spokesman Mike Vega.

“Once our officers arrived on the scene, they located a male who had been shot multiple times,” said Vega.

Miami Fire Rescue transported the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

“There was another male who cooperated with us and said that there was self-defense. We know that these two individuals were in separate vehicles. We don’t know what led to the discussion or the argument between them two, but we have recovered three firearms,” Vega added.

Alleged shooter in custody

“We have the person who was the alleged shooter in our custody. He is at the station being interviewed and we also have two witnesses that were present to get their statements on what they saw what occurred.”

Vega said that officers are also searching the surrounding area for surveillance footage from local businesses and residences to assist with the investigation.

“It is still too early to determine why this incident occurred, what led to their argument, but what we know is that there were a lot of shots fired, and one person is now dead.”

Firearms found

Police confirmed the recovery of three firearms from the scene.

“We still don’t know if the person that is deceased also fired rounds, but we did locate three firearms on the scene. Two firearms were discovered next to the blue vehicle, and one firearm was taken from the alleged shooter,” Vega said. “There were over 10 shots fired.”
