Waterfront Naples estate sells for $225M, marking second-highest US home sale

The billionaire DeGroote family sold their waterfront Naples estate for $225 million, marking the second-highest priced home sale in the country.

The sale, to a land trust that conceals the identity of the buyer, is a record for home sales in Florida, surpassing Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison’s $173 million purchase of a Manalapan estate in 2022. The Wall Street Journal first reported on the Naples sale.

The deal closed on Friday, records show.

The 15-acre property at 2170, 2200, and 2340 Gordon Drive hit the market last year for $295 million. Michael McCumber of Gulf Coast International Properties represented the seller, while attorney Kevin Coleman represented the trust that purchased the property, according to a press release.

The compound includes 800 feet of direct Gulf frontage. It’s within Naples’ Port Royal neighborhood.

The DeGroote family’s patriarch, Michael DeGroote, owned or invested in a number of businesses, including trucking, waste management and financial services. DeGroote, who died in 2022, was from Ontario, Canada, but he lived in Bermuda.

The deal follows a string of high-priced sales in Florida. The wealthy Kollman family from Germany sold their Miami Beach compound at 88 La Gorce Circle for $75 million. It was on the market for $88 million. Nelson Gonzalez of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty represented the seller, while Ryan Mendell of Maxwelle Real Estate Group represented the buyer.

Also in Miami Beach, Daniel Nutkis and his wife, Marcella Raneri, paid $40 million for the 9,442-square-foot, seven-bedroom mansion at 3080 North Bay Road.  Nutkis is founder and CEO of Frisco, Texas-based HITRUST. Chad Carroll with The Chad Carroll Group at Compass brokered the sale.

The Naples sale is second in the country to hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin’s $238 million purchase of a penthouse at 220 Central Park South in New York in 2019.
