Dealership expanding? Craig Zinn Automotive pays $15M for Hollywood church site near its Toyota sales centers

Craig Zinn Automotive Group paid $14.5 million for a Hollywood church building that’s near its existing Toyota dealerships.

The Hollywood-based auto dealer, led by CEO Craig Zinn, bought the one-story, 51,700-square-foot building at 1800 North State Road 7 from Hope Church of Christ, according to records and real estate database Vizzda.

The building was completed in 1960 on a 4.5-acre site, Vizzda records show.

The site is directly south of Craig Zinn Automotive’s Toyota dealership at 1850 North State Road 7 and across State Road 7 from its Toyota of Hollywood dealership at 1841 North State Road 7.

The church, led by Rev. Alvin L. Daniels Jr., holds its services in the recently purchased building, according to its website.

Craig Zinn Automotive plans a “future development” on the site and is still determining the use, according to a statement a company spokesperson provided to the South Florida Business Journal. Craig Zinn Automotive didn’t return The Real Deal’s request for comment.

It’s unclear if the church will move. It currently also holds services at 2475 West Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, according to its website. A church representative didn’t return requests for comment.

Craig Zinn Automotive has been in expansion mode. It paid $23.5 million last year for the 8.3-acre dealership development site at 15200 Southwest 136th Street in Miami-Dade County’s Kendall neighborhood.

The auto group’s other dealerships are Acura of Pembroke Pines, Lexus of Pembroke Pines, Subaru of Pembroke Pines and Lexus of North Miami, according to its website.

Across South Florida, car dealers have been actively scooping up sites. In September, Sienna Motors paid $21.9 million for a shuttered dealership at 2714 North Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, and an adjacent retail plaza at 2860 Northeast 17th Avenue.

In June, Morgan Auto Group became Florida’s largest car dealership owner after paying $22.5 million for the Hollywood Kia sales center at 1640 South State Road 7 in Hollywood. That came on the heels of Johnson Automotive Dealership Group paying $25 million for the site at 2121 Biscayne Boulevard in Miami’s Edgewater, with plans to convert it to a Kia dealership and showroom.

South Florida is experiencing hefty investment in religious sites, with buyers planning preservation, adaptive reuse or redevelopment projects.

In Pompano Beach, Cavache Properties plans Old Town Square II on the former home of Christ United Methodist Church at 210-217 Northeast Third Street. It plans a pair of 10-story, 319-unit apartment buildings with 3,200 square feet of retail. Christ United Methodist moved to Fort Lauderdale.

Also, Steve Ross’ Related Ross completed this year the 25-story One Flagler office tower at 180 Lakeview Avenue in downtown West Palm Beach. The adjacent First Church of Christ, Scientist sold the development site to Related Ross and kept ownership of its sanctuary.

Developers Tal Levinson and Eric Malinasky have scooped up several religious sites, helping congregations find new homes. In Fort Lauderdale, they plan a pair of six-story buildings with 400 units to 500 units on the southwest corner of Northwest Fourth Street and Seventh Avenue. The assemblage included the site of the Christian Church of the Regeneration, also listed as L’Eglise Chretienne de la Regeneration, which moved to Lauderhill.

Also in Fort Lauderdale, Levinson and Malinasky plan a 160-unit apartment project at 500-534 Northwest Ninth Avenue. The site was home to the Shaw Temple AME Zion Church, which moved elsewhere in Fort Lauderdale.
