Soon after storms Ian and Nicole battered Florida, hurricane time for 2022 finishes quietly


MIAMI — The 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Year formally finished Wednesday.

This year’s hurricane time generated 14 named storms, of which eight became hurricanes and two intensified to important hurricanes with winds reaching 111 mph or bigger.

In an common season, we usually have 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and a few big hurricanes.

A look again at the 2022 hurricane period that created storms Ian and Nicole.

NOAA’s Hurricane Period forecast had known as for 14 to 31 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes and 3-6 main hurricanes.

In comparison, meteorologists at Colorado Point out College experienced forecast 20 named storms, 10 Hurricanes and 5 important hurricanes.

There had been a few hurricane landfalls alongside the coast of the U.S. mainland. 

Hurricane Ian to start with designed landfall as a Classification 4 storm in Cayo Costa, Florida on Sept. 28.

With max sustained winds of 150 mph, Hurricane Ian tied for the fifth strongest hurricane at any time to make landfall in the U.S.

Then Ian then made a next landfall as a Class 1 in Georgetown, South Carolina. 

And Hurricane Nicole made landfall in close proximity to Vero Seaside on Nov. 10th. 

The storm devastated sections of Florida’s east coast and caused intense beach erosion. Nicole marked the third November Hurricane to strike Florida.

Hurricane Fiona created landfall outside of the mainland U.S. as a Classification 1 near Punta Tocon, Puerto Rico.

It was a distinctive year outlined by a scarce mid-time pause in storms. Just after a quiet period in August, the tropics became very energetic in September with seven named storms, such as the two main hurricanes, Fiona and Ian.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season commences again on June 1st, 2023.
