Broward reviews widespread beach front erosion soon after Nicole’s lashing

POMPANO Seashore – Broward shorelines took a beating in the course of Hurricane Nicole Wednesday. Relentless pounding waves stripped shorelines of sand creating prevalent erosion.

Charles Dube saw it when he stepped outside the house his doorway Thursday and on to the south stop of Pompano Beach.

“The waves had been powerful Wednesday night.  I missing at least 75 feet of sand,” he stated.

On Thursday, Broward Beach front Plan Supervisor Jacob Rice traveled from Hallandale Seaside up to Pompano Seaside with a crew to document the erosion on the extra than 20 miles of beach locations in the county.

“The south conclusion under Port Everglades appeared to be hit the worst,” he said.

After a whole evaluation is completed, Rice explained the county will supply up answers for the different municipalities.  “It could be a renourishment undertaking, a dune grant or an Army Corps of Engineers challenge,” Rice claimed.

The Military Corps is still working on a large beach renourishment undertaking in Broward, but previously considerably of the tons of sand trucked into Pompano Seaside from NE 16th Avenue north to the Hillsboro inlet has been washed out to sea.

“I moved right here 15 yrs in the past and saw what a issue erosion was,” claims wildlife and marine biologist Kristen Hoss.

Hoss is the executive director of the Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA).  The Alliance is a nonprofit that focuses on restoration and leisure prospects for any person fascinated in supporting the atmosphere no make a difference the age or capacity stage.

A person of their efforts is dune and mangrove restoration in partnership with Broward metropolitan areas.

For virtually 10 yrs they’ve been doing the job on building dunes on Broward shorelines. Sand dunes provide purely natural coastal defense from storm surges and superior waves, blocking or lessening coastal flooding and structural injury.

“The point out of Florida claims if you renourish beach locations, you should put dunes to continue to keep the sand in position,” Hoss stated.

Environmental educator Sean Doyle is on a mission to empower communities to have an understanding of we can all play a part in hoping to retain sand on the seaside.

“It truly is some thing basic as placing a plant to lock in the sand,” he claims.
