IKEA soon to open in Miami-Dade
IKEA, one of the nation’s top home goods seller, is soon to open in Miami-Dade as it broke ground in Sweetwater on Tuesday.
The store from the Swedish retailer is the fourth in Florida and is projected to finish in 2013. Also, it will be larger than the IKEA store found in South Florida.
There are many reasons why IKEA is popular to homeowners. Known for providing streamlined furniture design, IKEA is popular to many style-savvy buyers of cookware, kitchen cabinets and even foods.
The massive 416,000 square-foot store is expected to generate as much as 350 jobs. The store expects to hire as soon as possible for future opening.
IKEA has its start 70 years ago in Sweden. It continued to grow and has now 340 stores worldwide, 38 of which are in the U.S.
The Sweetwater branch will be called IKEA Miami and will be built adjacent to the Dolphin Mall. Although the store will be built on a relatively small 14.6 acre land, the developers plan to finish it on top of a two-story parking area.
The $73 million project is headed by Balfour Beatty Construction. The contactor expects to hire at most 400 workers. And while the store will definitely be larger than the IKEA found in Sunrise, it will also provide 1,500 parking spaces.
